Special Post No. 080

Provincial Reconstruction Team Zabul - Forward Operating Base Smart
Qalat, Zabul Province, Afghanistan

The photographs below were taken on 10 February 2012 during two missions outside the wire. The first, a dismounted foot patrol Old Qalat City, was to observe progress on my radio station, municipality perimeter wall, hospital expansion, ministerial offices and site construction, school dormitory perimeter wall, and roadway paving projects. The second, a mounted combat patrol through New Qalat City, was to observe progress on another set of ministerial office projects and a pending warehouse rebuild.

Throughout the course of this deployment, I have found the entry doors and gates into Afghan compounds to be very fascinating, if nothing else revealing of the inhabitants behind each. My series for these photographs, the doors, is tentatively titled, "Afghan Doors." We'll see if it sticks. Other photos below depict the harsh reality of the places we encounter during any one of our recurring missions outside the wire. Enjoy.
