FOB Smart at 1900 - Monday
The Giants won the Super Bowl this morning, yesterday for those in America. As our U.S. Army brothers here from the Massachusetts Army National Guard would say, "the refs made a few bad calls!" Well, I wasn't there because I opted to sleep for four more hours and enjoy my slumber as much as possible. Today was no more different than the last 267 days. With 79 days to go until I leave Afghanistan, I can pretty much guarantee the remaining days will be marked similarly.
I have missions planned for later this week - finally. It is amazing how quickly the mind yearns for outside the wire missions once it is forced to be more dormant. The everyday occurrences of war almost seem to become normal, whatever normal is anyway, after a time here. It is nearly impossible to remember a time when leaving work and going home for the day did not include a staff meeting whereby the review of security postures, security threats, security issues, and the management of a tiny city weren't included. Life has become so standardized, controlled, secured, and seemingly automatic in my time here. I certainly yearn for the days of literal freedom to move about a city, work, home, etc. without thinking of what might be waiting for me on the other side of the walls. This is me saying, however, that this is absolutely one of the greatest professional experiences of my life.
143, Kaesen.
Good night and good day.
