FOB Smart at 2200 - Friday
Snow fell again in Qalat, and on FOB Smart, today as we rose from our warm and comfortable slumber. The snow later turned to a mixture of freezing rain, which ended up as slush atop the already frozen and snow-covered ground. Missions were either delayed or cancelled altogether. However, my mission outside the wire was not and it helped me accomplish much, as I had to pick-up two fellow USACE personnel from a nearby FOB, stop at another FOB for mail and light shopping, return to FOB Smart for IT updating on my USACE computers, and have them returned several hours later to their FOB. It was, and still is, a good day. Albeit one that was cold, dreary from the rain and snow, and slow.
I wonder what Kaesen is doing right now? Is he playing or sitting or running through a room somewhere - school, or home, or somewhere in Aberdeen or Montesano. Being so far apart, it often feels as though this is an extended dream from which I cannot or will not wake up. Other times, especially when we Skype or speak on the telephone, it seems we are each in the next room and life has not changed and he is rounding the corner to come sit in my lap or give me a loving hug. Dreams or not, I am so thrilled to have this wonderful boy, my son, in my life - however I can have him right now.
Tomorrow we'll expect more of the same with regard to weather, work schedules, workload, etc. I am, as I have been so much lately, very interested in time flying by, this tour ending, and my life returning to whatever "normal" will be upon my return.
143, Kaesen.
Good night and good day.
