FOB Smart at 1800 - Thursday
We enjoyed an afternoon mounted combat patrol into New Qalat City today. I had two projects to observe and Chicky, my USACE counterpart here, had one. Aside from the kids at Chicky's project spitting on me and him and throwing rocks at us, it was rather uneventful. The whole rock-throwing threat is nothing new, but I have not been the recipient of sputum before. This wild frontier we live in is complete with some very kind souls and equally with mean and nasty souls. But we find this all over the planet; it is not just an Afghan experience. People do need to police their kids a little more and not let them develop so much hatred for outsiders or others different than themselves.
The projects I observed are nearly done and recently I closed out three more. I guess I enjoy the construction phases the most here, but seeing them occupied and with completion is a great feeling no doubt. Now that I am pondering it more, it seems I love all aspects of construction management - even when the work is 10,000 miles away from familiarity and safety. Actually, being here, serving with these fine Americans and friends of America is such an incredible honor and privilege. I am glad to have volunteered to endure the complete life and normalcy separation. I am more delighted now that it is almost over.
143, Kaesen.
Good night and good day.
