FOB Smart at 1800 - Saturday
We completed another dismounted foot patrol into Old Qalat City this morning. We observed progress on five of our projects. The overall mission went off without a hitch; however, during our first stop, while climbing off a roof using an Afghan job-built ladder, one of our soldiers fell and injured himself. I did not see the fall itself but the immediate aftermath. Like anything else we train for, the recovery was swift, thoughtful, and carried out well. Once we had him back in the control of our medical personnel we resumed our mission and enjoyed the warm spring morning. These projects are all about to really get back into a fast pace once we resume concrete construction next week. I like it this way.
Saturdays are "movie night" on the FOB. I think they may be showing a movie that I have already seen; besides that, I usually do not watch movies here anymore outside of the comfort of my room. I like the cozy seclusion afforded me from my quarters. The movie playing on my USACE-provided widescreen LCD tonight will be exciting nevertheless.
I spoke with Kaesen for nearly an hour this morning before he went to bed (his last night). This was an unusually long call on both Skype and the telephone. We both enjoy these calls to no end. He is very excited for Daddy to come home and "never go back to Afghanistan." I am too! Although he has repeatedly asked me to bring him here in 20 years or so; maybe he and I can come back as "adventure tourists" when he is much older.
143, Kaesen.
Good night and good day.
