Special Post No. 123

Provincial Reconstruction Team Zabul - Forward Operating Base Smart
Qalat, Zabul Province, Afghanistan

The photographs below were taken on 15 April 2012, during my final scheduled dismounted combat patrol. We walked into Old Qalat City this morning to observe progress on a perimeter wall project surrounding a municipality compound, a new radio station project therein, a hospital expansion project, and the exterior work ongoing for two more nearby upgrades projects. It comes with a sense of honor and accomplishment that the mission went uneventfully, with appropriate handshaking and goodbyes to certain of my contractors, that I find myself completely comfortable transitioning back "home" in less than seven days. The later photos below are of me and a few buddies, saying our goodbyes. One Team One Fight. Enjoy!

A view north from the Fort Murphy-Matthews perimeter wall standing atop a new platform tower. Alexander's Castle is in the background; in the foreground is a traffic circle leading to, among other places, Bazaar Road, the main bazaar, and the large Qalat mosque.
