AF Day 339

FOB Smart at 1830 - Tuesday

Well, well - the time has come to enter my last daily blog post from Forward Operating Base Smart. My day consisted of much packing, a couple of meetings, and a surprise ceremony in the commander's staff meeting to receive a Certificate of Appreciation from Lt Col Marc Sheie, US Air Force, our current PRT commander and another certificate and a U.S. flag flown over FOB Smart recently in honor of my service. I am humbled by the kind words spoken to me, in front of my peers, this evening. Words cannot justly describe how incredibly honored I have been to be a part of PRT Zabul here at FOB Smart.

Tomorrow evening I will be in Kandahar. I learned last night that my nephew, Leyton Summerlin (same as my name) will also be there and available to hang out, visit, and share company. I can think of no greater end to this deployment than to spend it in the war zone with my beloved nephew. In a few days my time here will be complete and I will fly home. I am tremendously grateful, although I presume the relief will not be felt until safely again in the physical space shared with my son.

I am eternally grateful for the friendships made during my time deployed. I look ahead with great anticipation and excitement to learn how all of these fine friends will live their lives, including those who remain here in Afghanistan, and certainly those of my Afghan brothers and sisters.

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.
