FOB Smart at 1800 - Friday
Yesterday was my last Thursday at FOB Smart - today is my last Friday, and the days dwindle down to next Wednesday when I finally fly away from this FOB for the last time. I fly to Kandahar and will remain there for a few days until that commercial flight on Sunday, 22 April 2012 takes me to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and I connect for the long flight back to Washington D.C. You can imagine how tiring this air travel will be, but I am certain that I will be all jazzed up with the anticipation of seeing my little boy again. I am truly down into the single digits with less than nine days remaining in Afghanistan. Talk about, "wow!"
Today I met again with visitors here form Kandahar, contracting officials, for one of our FOB projects. I also met with one of my Afghan contractors, and observed concrete pouring and construction layouts in progress. The weather outside is absolutely perfect. The breeze, albeit laden with who-knows-what dust and other inorganic particulates, feels truly wonderful now. The sun shone brightly today, the construction work underway nearby was encouraging, and it seemed to be another great spring day.
We have more outside the wire observations coming up that will allow me to see certain of my projects again for a final time. My nephew, Leyton Summerlin, will soon be deployed within a few kilometers of me at a nearby FOB. I am trying to arrange a trip to see him before I leave. What an amazing family photograph that will be!
143, Kaesen.
Good night and good day.
