FOB Smart at 2300 - Saturday
My missions today included a three-hour, multi-kilometer foot patrol through Old Qalat City. We observed the usual projects of mine, shopped along the bazaar, and conversed with as many locals as we could. The mission, while unusually long, was a wonderful experience, as usual, and proved invigorating to say the least. I would love to do this same mission every day save for the danger and potential for disaster. We also completed a mounted combat patrol mission this afternoon, also to usual projects of mine, and had a terrific opportunity to give away most of the candies and sweets my momma sent to me for this purpose. The children were eager as always to receive the "American chocolates" and other delectable treats. You know, if you take away the fact we are at war or in a war zone, this place is actually very beautiful and interesting. Well, I suppose it is both of these in spite of this war, but someday it would be nice to be here in a time of peace.
Time is quickly passing by and in approximately 19 days I will hold my son in my arms once again. It warms my heart immeasurably to think about all the fun he and I will share together again.
It has been a very long day, my body aches from all of the strenuous walking and riding. I think I will turn is as quickly as possible.
143, Kaesen.
Good night and good day.
