AF Day 201

FOB Smart at 0045 - Thursday

I am still awake from yesterday. I watched a movie earlier, congratulated an Air Force NCO on his promotion from Staff Sergeant to Technical Sergeant (E-5 to E-6), and conversed with a few friends. I cannot sleep for some reason right now. So I find myself here, writing a little more.

Later this morning I have several contractor appointments, including one outside the wire. I also have several internal meetings later in the day. I just know that today will be grand in every way. If I weren't so tired, I'd consider walking over to our fire pit and lighting a little fire to sit by for a little while. Well, that and if I didn't have to work today and weren't in a war zone. Such is life, right?

I have 14.97 days, or less, until I fly over 10,000 miles again!

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.

AF Day 200

FOB Smart at 2000 - Wednesday

We completed another foot patrol outside the wire this morning. The projects nearby appeared normal and were busy with work in various stages of completion. I know I say this all the time now, but it was cold this morning again. I am ready to start wearing my long-johns. It should start freezing here in the next two or three weeks, so work will halt immediately thereafter. The break will be a welcome change of pace, if only briefly, for us all.

The days come later and nights earlier than they used to, which is expected with the change in seasons. Maybe we'll get a large snowfall soon. Holiday spirit is felt even here so many miles away from home.

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.

AF Day 199

FOB Smart at 1830 - Tuesday

We completed another mission outside the wire today, only today's mission was for a supply run and personnel delivery. I added onto this so I could mail Kaesen, my son, another package of treats and sweets; he loves receiving packages now.

It was frosty this morning and I was cold. It is really winter 2011-2012 here now. The days and nights are cold. This morning I was observing progress on an expansion area and needed a heavy jacket due to a cold wind blowing. It felt a lot like Devils Lake, North Dakota.

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.

AF Day 198

FOB Smart at 2130 - Monday

After nearly 200 days, including my first R&R, I am pleased to pronounce that having been here has, for me, been a privilege, an honor, an inspiration, and an incredible journey. I should say that living in this land is nothing short of magical and transforming. I have many more days, weeks, and months to go, but right now, in this moment, I am incredibly grateful for the experiences and encounters I have lived through. Many more wonders await me, but next up is another R&R and another grand time with my young son.

Today we completed yet another wonderful mounted combat patrol with a dismounted foot patrol through two small villages, including Bakurzai, which is just south of Qalat in Zabul Province. The children there were terrific and although I have already given away all of the sweets and treats sent to me for the local children by my mother, I had left a few toothbrushes and energy bars, which they of course enjoyed just as much. Bakurzai sits atop the west banks of the Tarnak River and is a lovely hamlet of no more than 20 families. We met with several village elders during our visit there and were constantly swarmed and surrounded by their children, boys and girls alike.

I wake to very chilly mornings now, frosty air quite visible with each exhalation, and am happy for the respite from the long and hot summer. A cup of hot chocolate sounds good right about now, but walking to the DFAC does not, so it will have to wait for morning, although coffee will likely replace the sweet drink. I will once more hold my son in now less than 17 days and I am excited beyond words.

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.

AF Day 197- II

FOB Smart at 1700 - Sunday

Two additional missions completed today, and they were strong missions complete with lots of "excitement" for all. The skies threatened rain all day and even delivered a little during our afternoon mounted combat patrol with a dismounted foot patrol through nearby villages. We had a small key leader engagement (KLE) in one village and were able to observe some local Afghan life slightly removed from the urbanization of Qalat. I had a terrific time!

I have less than 18 days to go... my heart is swelling with love and excitement to see my son again. I imagine this is how most people feel when they are anticipating their R&Rs from here or other areas of the war zone we live in now.

I am hungry! So, this is where I stop writing again...

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.

AF Day 197

FOB Smart at 0830 - Sunday

This morning has started quietly, if not peacefully, and I am ready to go out into the world and do great things! Well, I am ready for missions, for meetings, for observations here and there, and even a little laundry. I presume another normal day is unfolding for me here at FOB Smart in Qalat, Zabul Province, Afghanistan. The air is crisp and you can see your breath as your walk around. Soon it may be snowing or raining and I am looking forward to this time of year here.

My son is winding down another fun day in the Pacific Northwest having eaten dinner and even ice cream for dessert. We spoke for a few minutes seconds ago; he said he had a good day.

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.

Special Post No. 068

The following were taken on 26 November 2011 during an extended three-hour foot patrol through Old Qalat City in Qalat, Zabul Province, Afghanistan. Provincial Reconstruction Team Zabul (PRT) and Agriculture Development Team Zabul (ADT) members participated with me. These photos were during the portion of our patrol where we stopped at local bazaar shops and purchased local goods, mostly fresh fruits and vegetables, and had conversations with shopkeepers. Talk about fun!

AF Day 196

FOB Smart at 2300 - Saturday

My missions today included a three-hour, multi-kilometer foot patrol through Old Qalat City. We observed the usual projects of mine, shopped along the bazaar, and conversed with as many locals as we could. The mission, while unusually long, was a wonderful experience, as usual, and proved invigorating to say the least. I would love to do this same mission every day save for the danger and potential for disaster. We also completed a mounted combat patrol mission this afternoon, also to usual projects of mine, and had a terrific opportunity to give away most of the candies and sweets my momma sent to me for this purpose. The children were eager as always to receive the "American chocolates" and other delectable treats. You know, if you take away the fact we are at war or in a war zone, this place is actually very beautiful and interesting. Well, I suppose it is both of these in spite of this war, but someday it would be nice to be here in a time of peace.

Time is quickly passing by and in approximately 19 days I will hold my son in my arms once again. It warms my heart immeasurably to think about all the fun he and I will share together again.

It has been a very long day, my body aches from all of the strenuous walking and riding. I think I will turn is as quickly as possible.

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.

AF Day 195 - II

FOB Smart at 2230 - Friday

You know, life is pretty amazing. If we slow down, are still and quiet, amazing opportunities often appear. Sometimes they come in the form of literal opportunities, such as work, or play, or even financial. However, the less common are with people. Even less so with people who have nothing to offer but company, compassion, and an eagerness to share their stories. It is within these stories where we may find inspiration, or rekindle zeal, or even motivation for positive change. Obviously, I had a conversation with a gentleman, whom I respect and admire, who happened to share a story of his hometown. If nothing else, it reminded me of why I would like to visit the historic northeast coast, but also because it revealed to me that anything worthwhile in life is attainable, so long as we work for it and focus on the end state. In the end, I always support and agree wholeheartedly with ridiculously dramatic change. I say so because such profound change often burns away the old growth, the kindled forest, and makes way for something brand new and beautiful in our lives. Have a terrific day, and night, friends.
Good night and good day.

AF Day 195

FOB Smart at 0900 - Friday

Another Friday has arrived and all is progressing appropriately this morning as it should. I have workers beginning their tasks on my FOB expansion project and likely the workers on my nearby outside-the-wire projects are also starting their daily tasks, although some will not, as today is the holy day in the Muslim world. With another less intense days planned here at FOB Smart, it should prove useful for paperwork catch-up and work planning for the coming week ahead.

I imagine all of you had wonderful and delicious Thanksgiving meals today, yesterday for me, and that, with your bellies full and heart's content, sleep is moments away. I shared Thanksgiving with the soldiers and civilians of FOB Smart yesterday and had conversations with a couple of you back at home.

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.

Letter to Santa Claus 2011 - from Kaesen Thieman Summerlin

My beautiful son wrote, with a little help of course, a letter to Santa Claus. Kaesen is as endearing to me as water is to my thirst in life. I am so thrilled to be spending Christmas with my son this year! Enjoy.

Notice how he informs Santa that he will be good and so good in fact that his mommy won't give him any "time outs!" I love his signature, too!

Priceless.

Forward Operating Base Smart, Qalat, Zabul Province, Afghanistan - Thanksgiving Day 2011

Our fine staff from the DynCorp Dining Facility (DFAC) at FOB Smart made, sculpted, and graciously prepared two extraordinary Thanksgiving feasts, lunch and dinner - two separate meals - for us on Thanksgiving Day. Below are a few photographs taken from the DFAC during our lunch meal. Thank you to them and everyone supporting us and all ISAF forces today and always in our efforts here in Afghanistan, and throughout the world. Being away from you is made a little easier with moments like these that we shared today!

AF Day 194 - Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day 2011 - FOB Smart at 0730 - Thursday

Good night and good day, y'all. For those of us fortunate enough to be serving our country here in the Middle East, it is Thanksgiving already and our delicious meals will happen in no time at all. More important than the meals though are the many reasons we all give thanks on this wonderful day. My reasons always begin with being thankful for my family, friends, health, and my Thanksgiving would never be complete without recognizing the inspiring beauty of service performed by those whom we may not say thank you to every single day - our soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, coast guardsmen, policemen, firemen, and civilians working in the service of people. Happy Thanksgiving to one and all and may God bless the Dallas Cowboys. Amen. LOL
I posted the above to Facebook moments ago and had to share it here as well. I will post again later in the day or night. Happy Thanksgiving.

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.

AF Day 193

FOB Smart at 2030 - Wednesday

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, but tonight I am expressing a tremendous amount of gratitude to all of my family and friends for loving me and allowing me to love you. I say this because even though I am 10,000 miles away from my son and other loved ones, I feel the love every time to speak with one of you and it warms my heart to no end. This time next year will be especially fun and filled with all of the holiday goodness I enjoy during the Thanksgiving break, but this year will be like no other. I am so immensely privileged to share this holiday with the fine young men and women here at FOB Smart. We'll share a proper roast turkey meal for dinner tomorrow evening and the day will be filled with ease and rest many.

I met with several contractors today, observed progress on the FOB expansion project of mine, met with our commander on several construction changes and issues, had a staff meeting, and shared two meals with friends in the DFAC. All in all, I'd say today was an especially nice day thanks to the spirit of the season and the welcoming family feel engendered here at FOB Smart.

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.

AF Day 192

FOB Smart at 2100 - Tuesday

Tuesday night means tacos around there parts and usually I would be one of the first in line. As I have been watching my intake lately, I will likely pass and opt for a less fattening sandwich. There will be plenty of red and green chili burritos in Las Cruces come December!

Our day here was another normal one with little bits of interesting interactions filling in the time between breakfast, lunch, and soon dinner. It is always a nice thing to see massive HESCO barrier walls erected in short time. HESCOs are the modern version of earthen ramparts designed to block or prevent access, as well as modern benefits of blast protection. I enjoy being outside alongside our contractors and tracking progress in real time. This also serves the benefit of correcting issues as they develop rather than after the fact, which can be costly or can extend schedules, which can also be costly.

It is 0830 in the morning where my son is likely just now waking from sleeping soundly. His day will begin with a hug and a kiss, and later a phone call from me. I often envy his schedule, which generally consists of eating, playing, bathing, napping, sleeping, and more playing! What a lucky little boy.

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.

AF Day 191

FOB Smart at 2351 - Monday

What a grand day we had here at FOB Smart. Mostly I say this because I had two incredible missions outside the wire, including a two-hour foot patrol through Old Qalat City and one mounted combat patrol into New Qalat City. We walked a terrific distance, saw many children along the way - which allowed me to hand out candy and goodies sent from my momma, and observed progress on five of my local projects. The children were so very happy to receive the sweets and I so happy to share with them. Thank you to my momma for sending them and a "thank you" for the Dallas Garden Club ladies too!

Kaesen sounded wonderful on his way to school a little while ago. He is always excited to share with whomever he is near that amount of days remaining we have until we reunite once more. At 24 days and counting down, the time for this is drawings near.

Tomorrow I have more work to observe on the FOB, which is progressing rather well now. I have more outside the wire missions planned and recurring regularly, so keeping busy, as usual, is never an issue for me!

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.

AF Day 190

FOB Smart at 1115 - Sunday

I have already completed several site observations on the FOB, met with three contractors, checked in with several projects and their contacts, reviewed a contractor solicitation, and stopped at the medical clinic to have my throat checked - and all of this was accomplished before 1000. I have several more contractor follow up calls and meetings today, more observations of progress, and all while cheerfully counting down the seconds until I see my son!

One of my coworkers left for training on KAF today, via helicopter, and another is hopefully flying out of Kuwait this evening to go see his family in Colorado (John Morgan, TSgt USAF). Our team is strong. The weather is good, although I had to wear my jacket this morning along with a beanie. All is well, friends.

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.

AF Day 189

FOB Smart at 1945 - Saturday

Today was filled with construction observations, construction meetings - a few anyway, a staff meeting, and wonderful fall weather. Tonight is "movie night" on the FOB, not in my room, but at the MWR tent. I heard a really nice complement about me from a coworker who heard it from her higher ranking boss at another FOB. It has been a good day.

I have 26 more days until I hold my son again!

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.

AF Day 188

FOB Smart at 1430 - Friday

The days and weeks seemingly pass by in an instant, although the time in between seems, at times, to linger longer than the soul can bear at times. At least when thinking in terms of how much we may miss you all back home. For me, the time here is rewarding and altogether exciting; however, missing my son also leaves its mark on my soul.

My project on the FOB is really coming along well now. The workers appear to be diligently coursing through the requirements and the new arrivals of heavy equipment make the project seem a little more familiar, as opposed to the typical hand-digging and laborers sculpting the ground like hoards of beasts toiling away uncontrolled in farm fields. These workers, in fact all the workers I encounter, are predominantly unskilled, but they works their hearts and bodies out every day. It is enriching to see them work so hard, but it is also nice to see them be given a break and let the heavy equipment do what they are intended to perform - the hardest of excavating and earth moving.

The mornings and evenings are really cooling down and the days in between a little cooler with each passing. I long for the fires burning in my brother's fireplace this coming Christmas and the time I imagine we'll spend with our family in Las Cruces, New Mexico. This time of year is always enjoyable. Next week is Thanksgiving and we here at FOB Smart are looking forward to a traditional Thanksgiving meal complete with roast turkey and all the trimmings.

143, Kaesen.

Good night and good day.
