FOB Smart at 2230 - Thursday
We left Kandahar this morning around 0900 and made the arduous and sometimes "exciting" drive back to FOB Smart in approximately four hours. Four is much better compared with the eight hours that our drive down to Kandahar took yesterday. When making the drive, we roll with heavy protection and participation from other US military units, as well as other ISAF, NATO, and Afghan forces. Today was no different; we were stacked with security. It makes me feel safe and proud to participate in these missions.
During our travels today, we observed what could only be described as unrestrained local nationals driving their cars, trucks, and passenger buses at speeds unsafe and unfit for our highways back home. They often pass us when we ourselves are travelling at high speed, high speed for up-armored vehicles anyway, and passing in the left lane or on the left shoulder uphill, downhill, and obviously on straightaway stretches of the highway. It is a wonder there are so few of the local populace injured in high-speed accidents here and everywhere in between the small towns and villages along Highway 1.
Starving from a lack of breakfast by the time, we had returned at lunchtime today, I quickly ate to sate my appetite. I then showered, shaved, and refreshed before taking a much needed and long nap. We do not have opportunities for many naps here, so it was a reward and a true pleasure. I awoke in time for dinner, although lacking in hunger I settled for a bowl of Baskin-Robbins Pralines & Cream ice cream. Talk about delicious!
Several of my workmates and I watched Transformers 3 tonight. I love this series. As it is late and I have much work to complete tomorrow, I find my body yearning for yet more sleep and recovery. So now, I must bid you all adieu fondly and with much affection.
143, K&K.
Good night and good day.
