AF Day 060

Kandahar Air Field (KAF) at 2359 - Wednesday

Today we met early for a mission briefing and loaded up for a large mounted combat patrol (MCP) mission from Qalat to Kandahar. We observed progress on many completed culvert protection systems along the way south to KAF. We also brought with us the last three outgoing PRT team members for their return home from KAF. The work we reviewed was complete and acceptable save for one or more issues discovered along our route.

Kandahar is a wild and burgeoning mass of humanity. I have to say - again - that I am so thankful to be stationed in Qalat at FOB Smart. There are many people at KAF from all points and an incredible array of traffic jams, people jams, long lines for fuel, food, and showers. At FOB Smart it is quite the opposite. Nevertheless, coming here was beneficial and is for many who are stationed at outlying FOBs. I ate dinner at TGI Fridays on the "Boardwalk" tonight with new friends from my FOB. I also received a haircut, which was necessary and appreciated, and the new look says, "high and tight and everything's right!" I picked up a few things at the Post Exchange (the military version of Wal-Mart or Target).

Later this evening I looked for, albeit unsuccessfully, a place offering dot-com access for my netbook and phone calls. I ended up at a magnificent oasis, the USO tent. While I ended up not being able to wait long enough to use their free phones, I did find a wonderful spot therein to record myself reading a book for my son and mailed it and a DVD of me reading it to him back home.

I am sure that my wife is worried with me not being able to call tonight. Babe, I am fine, safe, and secure. I will call you tomorrow when I return to FOB Smart.

143, K&K.

Good night and good day.
